Guadeloupe: The Caribbean Island Living Under an Occupation of Fear (Doc)

A dire economic situation and a strengthening drug trade places the capital of Guadeloupe in the top place in France for homicides, robberies and violence against children. A sad statistic which the police, local organisations and volunteers are working to change. Having faced eighteen armed robberies of her small store, a shopkeeper in Pointe-à-Pitre is hesitant to even share her own experiences of violence. In the city centre, shop owners grit their teeth: insecurity and danger is becoming ever more commonplace. The film hears from an intellectual figure on the island, Édouard Boulogne explains the root of the problems that are shaking up Guadeloupe. This documentary was produced by Keep Shooting and directed by Guillaume Martin and Grégoire Deniau. It was first released in 2014. ——-
