Uganda is making bold moves in artificial intelligence. Kampala-based Sunbird AI has launched Sunflower, the country’s first large language model capable of understanding and communicating in over 31 Ugandan languages, including Luganda, Acholi, and Ateso.
Built over six years using digitized books, crowdsourced data, and community partnerships, Sunflower can translate, summarize, and answer questions while preserving cultural context that global AI systems often miss. The team is already partnering with Wikipedia and plans to expand across Africa, targeting over 100 languages by 2026. With speech-to-speech features launching soon, Uganda’s tech future is looking vocal, local, and globally significant.
