How Kigali’s Wetland Rehabilitation Is Reducing Flood Risks for Over 200,000 Households

Kigali’s ambitious wetland rehabilitation project is transforming degraded ecosystems into powerful natural flood control systems while improving environmental sustainability. Four major wetlands, including Nyabugogo, Gikondo, Rwintare, and Kibumba, are undergoing restoration after years of industrial encroachment. The project has introduced hydraulic interventions such as ponds, dykes, spillways, and water filtration systems to retain excess water and reduce flooding risks for over 200,000 households. Beyond flood prevention, the wetlands are being developed into eco-tourism and recreational spaces featuring walkways, cycling paths, botanical gardens, sports facilities, and information centers, positioning Kigali as a model for sustainable urban environmental restoration.
