African Fighters in Russia-Ukraine War: Thousands Recruited, Hundreds Killed

Africa’s involvement in Russia’s war against Ukraine may be far greater than previously understood. According to Ukrainian officials, nearly 3,000 African fighters have reportedly been recruited by Russia from across the continent, with more than 300 killed in combat. While a few governments, including Kenya and Ghana, have raised concerns over recruitment and the safety of their citizens, many families remain in the dark. For captured African fighters held in Ukrainian prisoner-of-war facilities, the reality is even more complex. Their stories reveal a troubling intersection of war, economic desperation, global politics, and uncertain futures far from home.
