Uganda’s aquaculture sector is receiving a major boost with a €6 million grant aimed at strengthening fish farming and supporting sustainable agriculture. The funding is expected to improve the aquaculture value chain by enhancing access to quality fish fingerlings, proper feed, and farmer training. Experts note that aquaculture already contributes significantly to Uganda’s exports, with over 90% of exported tilapia coming from fish farms rather than natural water bodies. With rising demand for animal protein across the East African region, Uganda is well-positioned to expand fish production through pond and cage farming, attract foreign investment, and strengthen regional trade in aquaculture products.
