Egypt is undertaking one of the most ambitious agricultural engineering projects of the 21st century through the New Delta Project, an initiative designed to transform vast sections of the Sahara into productive farmland. Faced with rapid population growth, limited arable land, and increasing pressure on the Nile River, Egypt is investing heavily in large-scale water treatment, irrigation canals, underground pipelines, and advanced flow-control systems. The project aims to cultivate nearly one million hectares of desert land while boosting wheat, sunflower, and cotton production. Beyond food security, the New Delta represents Egypt’s bold attempt to reduce import dependency, strengthen agricultural sustainability, and redefine how arid nations can feed growing populations using innovation and smart water management.
