EastAfrica Grain Trade: Ending Exploitation Through Formal Markets, Aggregation & Quality Standards

For years, Uganda’s grain trade has relied on informal cross-border deals, with Kenyan traders exploiting farmers by buying unharvested maize at low prices. Efforts now focus on formal channels for better price discovery, transparency, and value retention. Stakeholders promote aggregation to sell at mature market prices, improved post-harvest handling, aflatoxin and moisture testing for quality. Simplified customs procedures aid legal trade. Stronger systems in production, marketing, and structured trading will help farmers and traders capture greater regional value from growing Kenyan demand.
