Students from Makerere University’s College of Computing and Information Sciences have launched Digital Bikes, an affordable campus bicycle-sharing service. Using a mobile app, students register with their university ID and rent bikes from 12 docking stations across campus for as little as 500 Ugandan shillings per 20 minutes. The system digitally tracks ride time and alerts users before expiry. Designed to tackle Makerere’s challenging terrain, the initiative promotes eco-friendly, healthy, and convenient commuting for students and staff and is emerging as a model for sustainable urban transport across Uganda.
