NARO Introduces Drought-Resistant Sorghum to Strengthen Food Security in Karamoja

Uganda’s National Agricultural Research Organisation is introducing NARO Sorghum 2 in Karamoja to help farmers cope with prolonged drought and food insecurity. NTV Uganda reports that the drought-tolerant variety matures in about 80 days, offering communities a faster harvest under difficult growing conditions. A demonstration field in Kaabong involves residents in planting, weeding and harvesting so they can learn how the crop performs and access seed. Researchers are also supporting seed multiplication for sorghum and cassava. The initiative aims to help communities move beyond coping with drought toward more reliable food production despite recurring climate shocks.
